I attended some classes, and read this book and suddenly it was clarified to my conceptual mind, what it was I was ‘doing’.

The stories of enlightenment by Western and Eastern individuals were really touching. First published init has not been out of print ever since, has been translated into ten languages and, perhaps most importantly, still inspires newcomers to take up the practice of Zen Buddhism.

We westerners look at things as parts of a whole, as if they are solid, unchangeable things. This article needs additional citations for verification. For many Zen students, it is still an essential inspirational reference work, one that urges the student to practice and practice hard to achieve kensho. Michael Singer, who wrote The Untethered Soul, described in another of his books, The Surrender Experiment, how he read The Three Pillars of Zen in his youth was was motivated to leave grad school for the woods to meditate and to wander. This book helped me tremendously, it spoke to my conceptual mind and answered many of its questions so that I could continue to practice without over thinking, if this makes any sense at all.

For someone like me, who has access to neither master nor sangha, the book is helpful.
