I strongly recommend it — even if you only want to discover his musings on cities and arts. In places like Buenos Aires, Istanbul, San Francisco, and London, the focus is more on the musicians and artists he encounters. There would be, for example, a mass of bulbous objects from various parts of the world and then some sharp, pointy ones grouped together. He does not see bringing a bike as an option, but rather as an integral part of his travelling. Despite the byrrne being called Bicycle Diariesthere is far more to this than tales of David Byrne adventures riding around various cities, in fact the actual cycle rides are a small, though interesting, part of this book.

Byrne travels a great deal and is an avid cyclist. Jul 11, Sue rated it liked it. The writing becomes sharper, more straightforward, and the book breathes more easily for it.
The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is that it was a little slow at times, but generally interesting and unusual. Nov 29, Jeremy rated it it was ok. I love everything about bicycling.
I can never resist a good travelogue. Want to Read saving…. Also, I thought about what fundamental assumptions Byrne holds that point him towards such analysis.

So this book is about that, and about urban planning—especially about bike-friendly urban planning and why that’s necessary, illustrated with examples and numerous photographs from the world’s cities, ones that get biking right and ones that don’t.
