One could lie, for instance, without appearing to be found out; but most of all one could view in safety the maternal persona itself, which more than any other was exposed by the forms it took, so that it seemed there was nothing you couldn’t find out about someone else’s mother simply by looking.
Some quotes I liked. If only this book had been around 25 years ago I think I’ll be reading and re-reading xifficult one. The distinctions between the ‘difficult’ mother and the ‘good enough’ mother were a good addition to the book and injected a measure of realism into the subject.
