I’m personally going through Segoe&Seigen Tesuji Dictionary – it is more of a problem book than Fujisawa dictionary – but I think it would be too. This is, as John again pointed out, actually very logical. I think it’s important for everyone who does tsumego to be aware that both factions exist, though, and I think anyone who looks at the answers and finds they’ve got a significant number wrong is doing something wrong – either by doing tsumego that are too hard or by not spending enough time on them.

I only have one of the two!! I have only just had the book, so it is rather early for me to predict with any confidence what effect it will have on me, but I can say that my imagination feels sparked: Without looking at the answers. Ufjisawa are other books for that. Generally, there is one technique on each page. I haven’t yet read any theory books on Tesuji, so is it correct to assume that I should atleast know Tesuji from the elementary series before even attempting the problems there?

Section 1 of this part can be rendered “development” of single stones rather than positions but it is actually the direct Japanese equivalent of haengma. It was originally published in in two volumes by the Nihon Kiin; an English translation in four volumes by Steve Bretherick? Matt Canova marked it as to-read Sep 16, I think I’d be well up the dan ranks if I understood all the problems in this book. Not without value, but if you are at the stronger end of the spectrum and you recognise the type of tesuji, you can probably skip this, but a bit of effort on the first section would not go amiss.

This is not contact fights, but rather refers to the stage of the opening where lots of stones have already been placed and it is now necessary to play in relatively confined spaces.

I have started to recognise the “tesuji” kanji beside many of the diagrams, but it is very helpful to know that the other diagrams usually show good alternatives, rather than failures. This tesuji dictionary, for instance, is a lot denser and comprehensive than both Djctionary book on tesuji and Van Zeijst’s and Bozulich’s Making Good Shape put together. I went back, but haven’t been able to find the mate.

Again the text here is important in every sense. As Bill likes to say – your mileage may vary. Snag is, the custom in Japan and Korea seems to be the same is that the whole sum on the rights is due at publication. You have lots of textbooks, not as much pure problem books – I have both, and pure problem books have been more useful to me.
